Bridge-style violin stand
Made from designer birch plywood, stained with a Jarrah decking oil and sealed with wipe-on poly. All cut from an approximately 19x18" board.
The shape is inspired by the bridge of a double base. Weeks of consultation with a violinist (my wife) went into the design. Many iterations in MDF before arriving at this. I'm pretty happy with the result. The violin supports on the legs, and behind the neck, are lined with PU leather, adhered with ultra high-bond transparent double-sided tape.
This is my wife's "silent" electric Yamaha violin. The stand is designed to accommodate a fitted shoulder rest, which many stands don't.

Both the violin and the stand you made for it are really cool, Graeme!

Thanks. I like the electric violin on it because it allows the stand to be shown off.

Very nice design, and workmanship! It's the first stand I've seen that accommodates a shoulder rest, particularly a Kun Bravo. I've been looking for a good design... care to share?

Re: Bridge-style violin stand
Thanks, Joe. I appreciate the feedback. Frankly, I didn't know it was a Kun Bravo as we bought it used.
As this is intended to be a commercial product, I can't share the design at this time. The plan is to have a range of stands, in this style, for different stringed instruments.
Cheers
Graeme

Very nice work. I am sure any violinist would be pleased to rest their instrument upon it. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Bridge-style violin stand
I understand completely! I may design my own based on the concept of using a bridge outline. My display stand uses a bout curve concept for the bases. Only one person has ever noticed and commented. I wouldn't make it a commercial product, just for my own (and maybe my wife's) use. She's the fiddler in the family, I just make them.Coogara wrote:As this is intended to be a commercial product, I can't share the design at this time.

Re: Bridge-style violin stand
I'm not sure how many musicians would even know what the 'bout' is. Upper, lower... between all the instruments we have in the house there must be 10 bouts I had considered using the bout shape for a guitar stand but will probably stick with the bridge shape for now.

Re: Bridge-style violin stand
All those MDF "Protos" were certainly worth it Graeme!!
BEAUTIFUL piece!!
No wonder she likes it!!
Wasn't sure what a "Jarrah" decking stain would look like with Ply....But it WORKS!!
Looks very stable as well?
Has it passed the "Feline Torture Testing" period well?
Well Done Graeme!!

I've learned my lesson well. You can't please everyone,so you have to please yourself

Thanks, Scott, the cats are ignoring it, which is odd, given how much they rub their faces on EVERYTHING! Very stable. Jan is still very happy.
However, already there are mods I'm planning to this design... once it's properly in use you see its deficiencies. Also working on the guitar stand.
A perfectionists work is never done.
