CUBS DUGOUT

Well a few weeks back there was quite a bit of chatter about poplar and its carving ability.
Seeing as my last trip to Owl Hardwoods netted me a considerable amount of someone elses Poplar order I decided to give it a run.
Overall I was quite impressed with how this species carved. First picture is straight off of the machine. Just a quick brushing with a stiff bristled brush and it was ready for a sealer coat before paint. It does have a slightly green tint when viewed unfinished but nothing that would prohibit me from using it.

Sign is for a nephews bedroom door. Whole family die hard cubs fans.
Material Poplar 16"x10-1/2" x 5/8" thick.
Logo & Lettering V-Carve with 60 deg Amana insert tooling 1/4" shank.
Figures and inset groove Profile cut on the line with 30 deg chinesium v-bit 1/8" shank.
Profile cutout 1/8" End Mill.

Initial seal with rattle can shellac 2 coats.
Paints all Acrylic Cobalt Blue, Brilliant Red and Titanium White.
Black spray ink on figures and border inset.
Final finish 3 layers of rattle can lacquer with light sand in between coats. Being mindfull of painted areas.

All in all a fun little project to satisfy my curiosity about poplar.
Jury says it is viable and I will incorporate it into some future projects.

Thanks for looking. Peace.

Nicely done.

Mannnn, I miss OWL Hardwoods. REALLY miss them. I keep mentioning to my wife that I might make a trip to the Chicago area just to visit Portillo's, OWL Lumber and Tasty Dawg up in Rockford. Well ok, I might just have to stop in at Berland's World of Tools while I am at it.

Looks great!
Theo will love it!
Congrats on a project well done!

As for Poplar on the CNC, my perception is unchanged from the router table it is better to work with than pine, but not nearly as nice to work as the hardwoods.

Thanks Ted,
Yeah good call on all of those other than Tasty Dawg in Rockford. They closed a few years ago. We do now finally have a portillos in Rockford. And a new Dog Haus opened in an old Ruby Tuesdays.
Love the Owl store but wish it was a bit bigger and closer to Rockford. I have also been going to the Hardwood Connection in Sycamore Ill. Good selection just not as many exotics.

Looks Great Dwayne . I think poplar from a lumber company is Alot better than box store poplar. I did a graduation gift for my niece out of poplar and off the machine needed almost nothing. Maybe we are Lucky :D .
