I have a couple of ladies, my sister and my daughter, who I made gifts for their birthdays this month. Both are Irish and their birthdays are near St. Patrick's Day. I made these Broaches from one of the Weaves in the Aspire Clipart folder. They are 2" in diameter. The light colored one is pine, the dark ones are walnut.

Re: Celtic Jewelry
Very well done Phil. I'm a big fan of these knots.
I have had loads of fun with Celtic Knot related projects over the years I have been working with CNC machines. There are lots of inspiration to be found in web searches for these kinds of designs. Some are historical, many are wildly fanciful.

Nice use of the knot, Phil.
I'm curious about the fragility of this kind of fine design. Do you feel they're robust, not prone to breaking under a little stress?
Thanks
Graeme

Re: Celtic Jewelry
Hi Graeme,
I was concerned about that too. They seem like that are not all that fragile. Better than I expected.

Re: Celtic Jewelry
Some woods are brittle and more prone to breaking at a place that is small in size, longer in length, and cross-grained. The Box Elder I recently used on some small crosses recently seemed to be a good choice. Anything you coat them with that can soak in a bit will help strengthen the weaker places. A couple coats of spray polyurethane or just a thin coat of liquid CA adhesive on the backside will help. Some of my crosses were 1/4" thick and are holding up well. Another style were cut from a 3/8" thick sheet.

For fragile parts including carvings on walking sticks made of Douglas fir, cedar, redwood, I soak them with wood hardener. Dale
