How about a musical Paradise Box?

Post by CarveOne »

On my website is the statement "There really is no limit to what can be done with Michael Tyler's original box design.". I've been trying, and have not found the limit yet. This one is a little beyond ordinary though. I call it a tribute to Michael Tyler and his venerable box design. :D

It is the full size box, except that height has been reduced to 3-3/4" and the wood is 3/8" thick for the side panels, 1/4" thick for the front, rear, and bottom panels, and 1/8" thick for the top panel. The top panel is box elder, all other panels are curly spalted maple. The fret board, nut, bridge, bottom panel stripes, and tail piece is padauk. There is a US silver dollar inlaid into the fret board. Grover brand tuners. The bottom panel is removable with brass flat head screws. The wicker weave is a 2x2 model that I created, and so is the chair cane weave.

There is some natural red streaking in the box elder top panel (but I assure you that it is not my blood spatter from learning to play this thing). It does sound pretty good, though spalted maple may have sounded a little better.

I think it was something called "snow" that was deposited by a passing artic vortex last Saturday. Has been too cold for it to do much melting. It makes a nice photo background though.

The wind is howling up here, but it's raining...and will be for 2 days:)
Only 2" on ground and that will disappear by morning:)
I really like your "Michael Box" guitar :)

I've said it before I've been making Michael's paradise box with many different themes for quite a few years but Carveone has taken it to another level.

Really nice!!!

Oh my goodness - what a great imagination, Richard! I never would have thought to incorporate the Paradise Box into a musical instrument. Another fantastic variation. Great job!!

Agreed very nice & next level. Also a very fitting tribute to Michael T. Not only does the Paradise box hold sweet memories now it also plays sweet music.

I can't begin to match how many projects that you dream up for your Carvewright website and for the Vectric users each month. The Paradise Box project really has been a good one for me, and I wanted to bring a big smile to your face with this tribute to your works. Thank you very much for all you do for the cnc woodworking community sir.

Well that wasn't quite what I was expecting from the title but I guess I should have known coming from you it would be box guitar based
Great job love it

Yes Martin, that was an intentional trick title. :) Just for effect.

There is no reason that a chime mechanism can't be installed in one of the boxes though.

I have a request from a close friend to turn one of the Paradise Box designs I have done into a cremation urn for his recently deceased wife. She liked my boxes and I had not made one for her so far. As with this guitar, the top panel will be glued on, and the bottom panel will be removable. It will have the 2x2 wicker weave on it. He has lymph node cancer, and her Paradise Box will be buried with him when he passes on.

Saying yes to making yet another box was very easy in this case. :(
