Corian soap dish for shower
I had a circular piece of 0.5" x 11.125" Corian on hand and used it to cut parts for two soap dishes. One will be screwed to the shower wall in two bathrooms. A 1/8" tapered ballnose end mill was used to cut the two dished oval areas and a 3/16" straight down spiral end mill was used to drill the holes and profile the parts. It took 18 minutes to cut. Feed rate was 150 ipm, plunge rate was 15 ipm, and rpm was 16k.
Saved another trip to town to buy something, and not much power cost.

Re: Corian soap dish for shower
Both soap dishes are now completed and installed. I used stainless steel 8-32 screws instead of brass for these.

Re: Corian soap dish for shower
Here is a more rounded version that I was going to make first, but it wasn't the version that my wife liked best, so I'll keep it on file. The zipped simulation image and crv3d file is probably too large to upload here, but if anyone wants it I'll make both versions available for free download elsewhere. (~4.6 mb)

Thanks Michael,
Pretty basic stuff, and of course it"s no challenge to make something like this with Aspire.

Re: Corian soap dish for shower
Did you ever try super glue to hold the vertical and horizon parts together?
I have glued a lot of corian with superglue and have never had a failure, of course
I have never tried it on soap dish ?

Re: Corian soap dish for shower
I considered it after first looking for Corian adhesive locally and finding none. Then decided to use the slow cure JB Weld epoxy that I already had on hand. I seldom use Corian and haven't needed to glue any parts made from it before now. The soapy water was what made the decision to go with the epoxy. It is holding up fine under use so far.

Re: Corian soap dish for shower
The adhesive used for under the counter sinks would work extremely well in this instance. That adhesive is readily available at home depot. Another alternative is windshield adhesive which can be found at most auto parts stores.
Nice work by the way.

"The adhesive used for under the counter sinks would work extremely well in this instance."
Please specifically expand on adhesives!
Got a 5K Corian custom triple sink falling apart by the numbers:(
Need to get it right the first time, and Social Security doesn't go far:(
I have hairlines from thermal expansion on 2, and right sink panel bottom has totally lifted where it was bevel cut.
Bottom 1/2" layer is delaming:(
Company is out of business, and sink on 20'th yr.
Any help appreciated.

Re: Corian soap dish for shower
Hi Scott,
Do a web search for "water resistant epoxies" and you will find a number of choices of brands and types. How resistant to water they are long term is anyone's guess. Some means of clamps or screws would seem necessary for a glue joint that has to support considerable weight over a long period of time, as in your case. JB Weld's Water Weld s one, but when I bought it a few years ago I found that it was a very thick putty that wouldn't work very well for what I needed at the time. There are other types available though.
The joint of the soap dish project is not where water will affect it much, so I used the regular slow cure JB Weld adhesive to hold the two parts together, and used two stainless steel screws to strengthen the joint. There is no real weight on this project, and the screws only serve as something to prevent bumping it from cracking the thin glue joint.
Trying to back-fill the cracks with thin cyanoacrylate (CA) adhesive may be a low cost substitute for a real solution.

Thanks CarveOne!
Cracks really expand when hot, so may expand crack/dry-clean with denatured/fill crack and then wedge joint tight while crack cools and contracts.
Got a couple scraps to test characteristics of adhesives, but was hoping to weld it like original adhesive.
Thanks again, and sorry for being off topic:(

Re: Corian soap dish for shower
Thanks Arbo,
The ones I made are working just fine. Easy to clean, and the 3/16" holes don't easily get clogged with soap residue.
