Two-sided Carving a Dish

Post by AndyPitts »

At the risk of being told there are better ways to do this  (to which I agree there are always improvements to be made), here is a video I posted that shows how I used Aspire and a ShopBot Desktop to make a nice, graceful wood dish. I hope it helps someone here. And, if you look very closely you can see that I changed from a raster roughing tool path to a z-level roughing tool path on the inside between the day I filmed the ShopBot action and the day I recorded the Aspire work. Continuous process improvement, right? Andy

Andy, another nice project and an excellent video. Two sided projects are very satisfying (and IMHO not as difficult as you think it will be before you do one).
I really like your wedge jig and plan on using that on my next two sided project after we get back from Jim McGrew's camp. Great stuff.

Cheers,
James

Excellent work and excellent video. It is very helpful to "hear" your thinking process as you developed the model. Thanks, Andy.

Thanks for doing such a complete video. You really cover all the steps from A to Z. I checked it out yesterday and will be trying that project soon. I have done several two-sided projects, but your technique will make it much easier. I have some ideas for edge design on the bowl I would like to try as well. Have a great day. :D :D

Thanks James. I must give credit where due. The wedge jig idea is an adaption of a jig I learned of from Randy Johnson.

Hi Andy
I have watched your making a curved top dish video until my eyes bleed and I just don't get it. I have tried with some success at a oval shaped dish and it didn't turn out that bad but I am still not happy. The dish I made has the walls too thick and did not have the curved top that really adds a lot to the design.
I have had good success with two sided boxes but when it comes to two sided modeling is where I have difficulty.
I am using Aspire latest version and a ShopBot desk top.
The video you have on Youtube was made before Aspire introduced the two sided machining and maybe this is where my trouble begins,
it should be easier, but, not for me.
What am I missing here Andy ?
Hope you can help.
Thanks

Andy,

That video has been an inspiration to me since I watched it a few years ago. A lovely project and a great video. So to you I say aye, aye Captain. Glad to see you here on the forum.
