Bugatti Box

Post by BillK »

Here's a project I made using Aspire and my Shark.

The top model is a Bugatti roadster model I created in Aspire. It is inlayed into the top with a 005" offset. I not sure of the wood species as the wood was given to me as reclaimed lumber. That is it's natural color.

The front is the Bugatti emblem carved in Mahogany. Also inlayed with a .005 offset.

The lid hinges are models I created of the Bugatti Veyron gas cap, also Mahogany.

I like to use a traditional chain to support my lids. I used a red chestnut stain over red oak to try to create an instant antique look and feel to this piece. Satin wipe on poly over.

I wanted to have the inserts stand out visually, so they are coated with gloss wipe on poly only to contrast the oak. I've been told the mahogany looks like leather, and it is a great visual effect.

This is a birthday present for my boss. I hope you enjoy.

Thanks.

This is terrific. I love the hinges, and the way that the oak grain plays against the steps on the top.
Cheers!

BillK,

Sorry about using the wrong name in my post obviously meant for you.......... You inspired me to make a larger box (larger for me) did you use conventional finger joints or where they cut on the CNC?

Thanks,
Glenn

Glenn,

I cut the box joints on my CNC. Here's a link to a PDF file that I wrote for dovetail joints. I use the same set up for box joints.
