Simple background texture

Here's a really simple background texture that can be done in V-carve Pro as well ...... it's just a pocket toolpath. I as hoping for a "burlap" look, but it came out looking more like knurled metal. This texture is appropriate for signs for an "industrial" customer, where something "artsy" would look "wrong".

Pocket toolpath, .125" ballnose, 99% at 45*. The second toolpath, reverse the angle to -45*. The substrate is Corafoam 20, & the pocket is .250" deep.

It's a wedding present . I like doing wedding presents because I get to experiment ..... no-one's ever said "I don't like it" LOL And, she was pleased, I must say, although it was 2 weeks late & her husband had to work the day we gave it to her.

Could you explain the technique used to cut the letting? It appears the font is vcarved in the middle. What font is that by the way, the sign is elegant.

Mick, first a footnote ...... I design in CorelDraw, because I''m pretty comfortable there & a lot of what I design ends up as digital prints, etc.. I then export to Aspire as a .eps.

So , I created a contour , duplicated & offset the duplicate, welded them together & then node-edited it to look "deep". I left that, the "shadow", standing proud & V-carved in the lettering with a 90* V-bit. If the sign was larger, I'd have used a 120* or a 140* bit.
The font is Sophia Script, available from Letterhead Fonts

The sign looks great.
Tried to duplicate your "Cloth" texture and ended up with these little pyrimids. (0.125 BN at 45 and -45 deg at 99% pocket). Any idea where I went wrong?

A way to carve the letters like this in VCarve Pro is:

Turn the text into curves, then offset (outwards) the curves enough onto layer 2 to force the VCarve tool to make a small flat outline around each letter when you VCarve the text plus the offset lines. Offset half as much onto layer 3.

Surround the text with the outline of the texture pocket you wish to make. Use layer 3.

Turn off layer 3, turn on layers 1 and 2 and select all. VCarve with a flat depth that is shallow enough that a flat is formed around the text.

Turn off layers 1 and 2, turn on layer 3, and carve the pocket texture at the same cut depth as the flat depth specified for the VCarve bit.

Mike S., that's what mine looks like up close. It looks more like a knurled metal than fabric.
I think if you run an end mill over it to take off the tops, it will look more like burlap. Either way, it's interesting & easy.
