2 Rail Sweep example

An example of what you can do with the 2 rail sweep.....
Overall size of finished frame will be 65” x 121” x 8 “ thick
Cut from sapele.
To be installed next week.

This is a laser pointer used for alignment, simply jog the gantry to where you want to set X0Y0 using the laser pointer then click a button on the screen and the software calculates the offset and sets a local X0Y0. It can also be used to align sheet good, parallel to an axis.

WOW that is beautiful.The Gothic windows are one of my favorite things to look at and kind of study. How did you set the curve on these? They seem to be curved. Sure would like to see it installed. I have a question on the laser pointer. I tried that but cant figure out how to set the offset. I dont want to ruin this thread and divert attention on your excelent work,but could you point me to that? Is it Mach that you are using?

Yes, as Mick Martin has so nicely explained, that gadget is a laser pointer.
I am using WINCNC but I would think that Mach3 would be able to accomplish the same.
I simple turn on the laser and position it where I want the XY to be.
Click on the “Set laser XY” button and the center spindle go to that position and sets it as home.

As for the other “special” attachment.
That, my friends, is a Paten Pending, custom designed apparatus, create especially for me by the great minds at MIT.
Using only the finest materials man can fine and with the acumen of the greatest workmanship known...Really ??? ..LOL :lol:

Now for the rest of the story....My “normal” setup for my 3 headed machine is a dust boot for each tool.
Yes I made it myself.
But, since this project required the use of 6” long bits, the normal setup would not do.
There are still plenty of clips flying but it does help control the dust.

So just in case anyone here gets the idea of “borrowing” my exclusive paten pending design, be forewarned,,,I will call out the infamous Philadelphia Lawyers to pay you a visit......LOL :lol:

This story could be made into a movie.....

Michael, congratulations on finishing the P. U. Firestone Library project.

Wow, some of those windows and frames are huge! The pictures on your website give a whole different perspective on the size and complexity of the project. A great example of the power of the two rail sweep. How many frames did you make?

Are the frames overlays on glass panels, or is the glass inset into them?

Your work really is awesome and I'm humbled, but inspired.

Beautiful work. Thank you for sharing... I am also wondering if these are just fronts over the glass, or if these are actual window frames and the glass is glazed into them. But what I would really like to find out how did you set up the tool paths. New to Aspire, I understand the two rail sweep and how you got the shape, but I was under the impression the two rail sweep will create model, which can be only machined using the rough and finish machining toolpath, using ball nose to raster over the entire project. Looking at your photos, it looks like you used profile tool path to to follow the profile of the frame, to cut the curved shape of the frame. Is that correct? I didn't realize it can be done with Aspire.

Basically the frame is a type of built up frame, made up of three parts.
The interior the center and the exterior.
When assembled the center section creates rabbets where the glass would sit.
It’s an old way of stained glass installation where one side of the return of deeper .
You side the glass in one side so that it passes the frame and then you side the glass over to be engaged into the return of the other side.
The glass is then set with any number of products,
Lime putty, concrete, mortar, silicone, or in this case , a polyurethane sealant.

The tool paths were developed using vectors to only cut the areas of the frame that needed the shape.
The profile cutting then cut the interior and exterior perimeters.
In the past this type of frame was made using many different machines and hand work.
Since I don’t have those types of machines, the CNC did just fine.

Thank you for the explanation. I am assuming you were using a ball end bit to cut the cove profile, which was not the same radius as the profile. If that is the case, I still don't understand how you use two rail sweep to model then profile and then used profile toolpath to cut the model. But as I said , I am new to Aspire, maybe I need to spend more time experimenting with it and it will come.
