Perfect sphere done with 3-axis

Post by Mike-S »

Perfect 4" sphere on a 3-axis Joe's Hybrid machine.
Board thickness needs to be about 25% of ball diameter.
1/4" RN to ruff; 1/8" RN finish. White pine.

Very cool. How long did it take for you to figure out. I don't think I would have thought of it. :)

Thanks Mike.

I haven't tried making anything by starting with an stl file until now. Figured it out w/o looking at a tutorial first, and have it set up for a 3" ball which should fit a standard 3/4" board thickness. I'll use two different color woods to make it that much more interesting to show off. :)

this may sound stupid but I assume that a STL file is a CAD file of some sort?

Speaking on that subject what is a good cad program to start learning? I am at a point where I am very comfortable with Aspire 4 but I know it's design limitations and want to start assembling things and I know I will need to use CAD to start designing the parts.

any help would be appreciated.
