Faux Graining MDF

Post by mtylerfl »

Here's some photos of faux graining MDF using a standard plastic graining tool. It's kind of fun to do! I've used this technique on everything from signs to wall murals over the years.

Cool . . . I bought the graining tool but haven't given it a try yet . . . you gave me perfect instructions that will take out some of the trial and error learning. . .

Hi Wolfie,

I think you could probably pick one up at a good paint store or an arts/crafts store. I bought mine a couple decades ago from a mom-and-pop hardware/paint store but recently purchased a set of them via Amazon.

If you can't find one, make it--you've got a CNC.

Just trim off the rough edges with a saw after carving; then stick on a handle. Ta da!

A great tutorial Michael. I like the idea of using paint. I have only done it using shellac and stains but will have to give paint a try.

I must also say that Mike's idea of making our own wood graining tool is inspired. I have to say that it is something that I would never have thought of, though it now seems obvious.

If it helps, here's my video showing a similar technique, though Michaels method makes coloring the engraving easier if you need different colors.

Wolfie, mine is exactly the same as the one Michael T has and I have bought a few of them over the years.
From memory the last one came from one of the Mitre 10 hardware stores on the Gold Coast.
I have bought other better ones here in OZ as well.
