Bird Feeder

bird feeder.jpg
Bird Feeder for small birds.
Roof panels lift off for filling on one side and cleaning on the other,
Entrance on each side has metal around entrance to exclude woodpeckers.
Plexiglass to see birds feeding and excludes all other critters.
Cedar, redwood, fir, and pine
Carved panel is left over laser cut test board for wishing well

Nice idea.
I'll have to copy it in time for the spring.

Great use of leftovers. Really good looking and practical, too.

But: what do do have against woodpeckers ?

Marcel.

The woodpeckers we have you would not want. They are starlings, native to the UK, and have no natural predators. They cause severe damage to buildings (2"+ hole thru 2x material overnight). They chase away all other birds and if you have livestock they chase them away and eat their food.
They are so nasty even the cats won't eat them.
We have them in the area in numbers in the tens of thousands.

Ow, I see...

'Ours' (a woodpecker family dally feeding in our backyard) behave very civilised. Here it's crows and magpies who are the bad guys. Interestingly, the local cats absolutely positively seem to hate magpies - I do not blame them.

Smart move putting the metal plates on the openings. Squirrels would be in there in no time! Nice!

Merry Christmas to all. I'd have to change the plexiglass panel to glass. The squirrels ate through a birdfeeder I had that had plexiglass. When i lived in Kentucky we had flocks and flocks of those nasty birds hanging out at our house in the country. One of the methods used to get reduce their population was to spray them with a wetting agent which let the rain soak through their feathers and this was done in conjunction with a freeze. I'm not sure what the wetting agent was and it screams too much to something almost as harmful to humans as Agent Orange.

I always find it interesting how people decide that critters in nature are either "nasty" or "good". They are all just trying to survive. I wonder, do the friends of the birds who got frozen think people are "nasty"?

Unfortunately some people do things that affect nature in a bad way.
Washington, Idaho, and Montana have serious Wolf problems, the decimation of wild and domestic animals.

Starlings were release in the US in the 1890.
Now there are hundreds of millions of them, even in Alaska.

They create hundreds of dollars in damage to my house and shop every year.
They even peck thru 5/16" concrete siding.

Officially, the European Starling is designated as an invasive alien species in North America

Great looking place for birds to feed! +1
