And Now for Something Completely Different...

Post by Tailmaker »

Speaking with Monty Python...
Lately I got a bit sidetracked into bladesmithing and steel forging which is not really relevant for this forum.

But for my first complete project (a kind of curved dagger) I needed a hilt with crossguard, grip and pommel.
I designed these pieces in mechanical 3d-CAD and imported to Aspire. Then created 3-d carving tool paths for brass (crossguard and pommel parts) and olivewood (grip). Came out quite nice, although it needed some sanding and polishing to come together smoothly.
K-HiltPolished.jpg
Carving the brass parts. I happened to have that brass bar for long time but carving this expensive stuff is not economical. Next such project I would rather carve a model in wood or wax and the cast these pieces from brass or bronze.
G-CrossbarPommelCNC.jpg
Carving the grip from birds-eye olivewood.
F-CarvingGrip.jpg
Complete dagger. It does not have a real historic relevance. The shape and size rather came about in the course of the project.

You keep raising the standard!!! Stunning work, both in the metals and the lovely Olive wood.

Fantastic project! How did you achieve the "stain" marks on the blade?

The Olive is wonderful and ergonomically flows with the brass in an elegantly pleasing way!!
Love the "Random" patterning!!

Pattern kinda tickles memory of blade starting with a "Harley" chain(?)
Color reminds me of a blade I have that the master told the guy at Freeport Knife was "alcohol"quenched.
Freeport owner told the Bladesmith that in America, a Bladesmith got more $ for his work if the piece was signed,
Oriental Bladesmith replied "IS signed...on tang" :)

BEAUTIFUL piece G. :) :)

Nicely done.

And all I have is a Case XX 2 inch pocket knife. Oh wait, I have a 25 year old incredibly slim stainless steel pocket knife that I paid $1.69 for at an Ace Industrial Hardware store. It has a 1.5 inch blade. I cannot believe I have not lost it yet.

The blade is forge welded in 20 layers and twisted from 3 different carbon steel alloys (one of them with nickel) and then etched with ferric chloride solution. The alloys discolor differently, exposing the forging pattern.

AWESOME Project --- Really like the details within the blade, in fact, all looks GREAT even the handle choice.

Gotta love this varied and surprising Forum! :)

I have a bad feeling since it is REALLY not software related. But since you asked (and in the spirit of project diversity):

1st step (just tack welded)
A-1stStack.jpg
2nd step (forge welded and drawn in the press)
B-1stWeld.jpg
3rd step (cut in 3 pieces and stacked/tack welded again)
C-2ndStack.jpg
4th step (forge welded, drawn and twisted)
D-2ndWeld-Drawn-Twisted.jpg
Roughly Ground (after final forging)

Final Etched Blade
