Here is another one of my project stories with a bunch of pictures.
My neighbor replaced his hardwood floor with new Acacia floor boards and had several left over, about 4.5" wide and 24" long. I decided to make a box from it with following challenges:
- hidden finger joints and slanted side boards
- a wooden hinge, carved in one piece
- a combination lock that is mostly hidden inside the lid
Since the boards were narrower that the desired box width of 8", I resawed a few boards and glued them book-matched together for the bottom and lid. For the latter, I glued 3 plies of these thinner sheets crosswise for less warp and cupping.
Other materials used are claro walnut for the dial and the lock cover and baltic birch with a piece of olive wood for the lock bar shifter.
Side boards prepared with joint fingers that will be hidden in the finished product:
Carving the hinge barrels:
Special jig for precise hinge pin hole drilling:
Jig in place:
Carving the dial of the combination lock:
Dial complete:
Ball bearings for the dial and detent magnets (in the ring of the dial and the groove of the lid):
Code rings and locking bar of the combination lock:
Box assembly complete:
Detail of the combination lock:
Box Open:
And closed.....

Re: Just Some Old Floor Boards
Astounding! My mind boggles at the geometrical calculations involved. And of course the workmanship, as always, is first rate. Ausgezeichnet!

Ho Hum...
Another creative, intricate, and absolutely over the top project by Tailmaker
The fact that it came out beautiful and I'll have to come back to the pics when my mind is fresh is besides the point!
Well done sir!
