6 sided - 3 piece lap joint - Double sided job

Post by dmayne »

3 piece lap joint test for a project I am working on. Actual pieces will be much larger. The joint cuts really well. Almost no slop movement at all. I ran this as a double sided job as the joint requires cuts on both sides to work properly. This was fun to figure out just using pics of a similar joint found online.

3 piece lap joint test
I’m liking the precise joints. +1

I’m wondering how to do this with 1/4” stock. There wouldn’t be much stock left on the double sided part.

LOL! Yeah, with each mortise depth 1/3rd the material thickness it would be tough!

Very nice joinery!

Yes I was impressed by precise joint too. Love my avid PRO60120.
The stock used was 1" x 3/4" x 7 1/2". 1/4" stock would be delicate but it could be done. My product parts will be 1 1/2" x 2" 'ish. Final dimensions are not set yet. There will probably be multiple sizes after running this test.

I thought I'd share what I found while working on that "test joint" you made and posted. You might find this cut easier to make. I know I did like that there were only two components to make. Yes, there are a couple of hollow spots, but there are glued surfaces that make those irrelevant.

This time, I didn't have to come up with the design! :D Thanks!

That is very interesting. It is still a double sided project though. I guess you could use either one. For what I need to make it cannot be glued. I was thinking of using a small bolt and inserting a nut on the bottom to keep them together when in use.

Cool design though.

Actually, the center piece doesn't have to be a double-sided cut (even though it has two sides!) All you have to do is flip the center piece over to make the same cut on the opposite side. I was working on it so it could also be made on a table saw or router table.

I didn't even look at the joint in terms of not gluing it together. I don't think that would change the assembly (with a screw/nut), but of course it wouldn't be as strong. You already know that, though.

I still haven't made anything with it.

You're welcome, but the inspiration was all from dmayne. I'm still trying to come up with a cross design, but life gets in the way.
