First attempt at epoxy inlay

Post by mickecarlsson »

My daughters boyfriend is an avid Arsenal FC fan so I decided I should do the Aresenal logo in epoxy inlay for him.
The wood I used was beech, about an inch thick.
I got the svg file for the logo at Arsenal FC home page and after an hour or so I got the design finished.
My approach was to have the red, blue and white done in epoxy.
First cast:

In the picture you can see what I missed, I did not noticed that then, tiny bleed from the red acrylic into the wood.
I then cut and casted the blue:

The day after I checked the casting and I was stunned, I had poured a lot of blue epoxy but it had sunk into the wood and bled incredebly.
I was not happy :(
So I had to mix up new blue epoxy and cast it again, this is after the second cast and when I started the white cut:

This is the white cast:

And the result after the final cut. As you can see, the blue had bled all over the place.

I did save this by staining the wood with dark stain and wipe that off.
I also sprayed a lot of clear laquer over the piece and polished it up, in then end I was almost happy.
I have now bought spray sealer, for the next project I will seal the work pice, and every cut befor casting.

My daughters boyfriend was very pleased, I had made a wood box for it and had locked the box with three padlocks and the keys for them was in the box. Yes, he had to pick the locks to get into the box. And he had no idea what was in the box,
It took him almost a week to pick the locks and he sent me this picture:

Ah yes, the bleeding. I have found 2 partial solutions. Applying an overall Livos oil finish to the piece before doing any cutting or casting helps on some woods. "Painting" the cut edges with clear epoxy helps too. It just means doubling your project time. It really all depends on the piece of wood. Even the same species will produce very different results.

Totally agree with jfederer - I "paint" the edges of the carve with "diluted" clear epoxy prior to pouring colored.
