Rotary Axis Work

Post by Gocarter »

I have been working on rotary access work. I made the model Zbrush and then cut it. I made a half size model in Spruce, then a full-size model on Spruce, and attempted a full-size model in alder and lost that because of a flaky uc100 connector. I replaced that and then did another test cut in Spruce, and then did one in Cherry. So I almost have enough pieces for a chessboard. But I am in fact happy with the final version in Cherry. It is just over 14 inches high and finish the general finishes oil and verathane finish.

Excellent job. I used to have a 3D Scanner, getting a few of my grandchildren and myself, then cleaned them up in ZBrush. Mostly I 3D printed them, but a few I did in wood using Alder. I think your outcome using Cherry turned out a lot better.

Wow, Gordon! Your modeling skills are outstanding - the likeness you achieved from your reference photo(s) is spot-on! Modeling “humans” (especially faces of people we know and recognize) is one of the most challenging undertakings for a modeler to get an accurate result. You were/are certainly up to the task!

I love the quality carve and finish - it’s a wonderful piece!

I don't think there is much I can add here to what everyone has already said. This is outstanding work.

Thanks guys, glad you liked it!

I used some die files to improve details around the eyes and a few other places. I’m usually pretty anxious to get my work off of the machine so I can finish it up by hand. I really enjoy doing the hand work after the machine is finished. It’s very rewarding.

Ah so I'm not the only one using die files for detail touch-up! I inherited my Dad's large collection. He was a Tool & Die maker with GM. It's probably the most used of his tools that I have, apart from the violin-making tools.
