Finishing toolpath, odd cutting depth, or feature..

Post by Gippetto »

In one of my projects i am milling 3 sides, upper, left and right, the thickness is 74mm and height is 190mm, large 1600mm. (i miss multiside feature in Aspire  ) Will post pics later when customer agrees.
So one side is 37mm depth, for both sides have done a roughing path with 3mm allowance a finishing and a profile path till 40mm to be sure is cut trough.
The cutter i select for the finishing is a 16mm bold cutter, and cuttingdepth is 20mm, wich is for the strategy i have choosen not a problem. Each time when i edit the finishing toolpath cutter, its shows me 77,7 mm cutting depth.
This looks rather strange.
I did test it without a roughing toolpath, and then the cutting depth is normal 20mm.
Is this because you first use the roughing toolpath?? and therefor i can ignore this setting?

Ruud,

Finish machining always cuts the model to size in a single
pass and doesn't use the Pass Depth setting. So if the height
of the model is 100mm the software assumes the cutter is
long enough to machine the required depth.

Tony,

Thanks, i already assumed it was like that.
But it also states you always should use a roughing toolpath for depth as in my example unless
the hardware is capabale enough to reach the depth in one pass. ?

The Finishing toolpath will always be at full depth ie cutting
the part to size in a single pass - and is never limited to the
pass depth. So I'm not sure why saw the finishing without a
roughing pass being limited to 20mm?

Thanks Tony.
It was the figure who showed me the 20mm, but didnt have seen the actual move.
But with this information i can fully confident start machining this evening.

cheers,
