LOTS of time I use a randon orbital sander with 220 grit to clean the top surface.
I will then use spray can clear lacquer - sometimes I sprinkle glitter on the wet lacquer, then coat again, depending on what is being made. Snowflakes and Christmas ornaments look great this way.
