Bottom is not flat cutting female inlay

Post by Onawa220 »

I've never done an inlay before and wanted to test it before doing it on my expensive piece of maple.

Using latest version of Aspire.

I'm using straight sides because I am cutting lettering out of acrylic to fit into the female part.

The problem I have is the bottom isn't even close to flat and it isn't uniform. I tried making a smaller version and it did something similar but not exactly the same.

I'm a very long time Aspire and CNC user and I'm a little baffled.

Any suggestions?

Please post you file.

Looks like a machine issue as a first guess.

Since the depth is shallow you might want to use a spiral down cut but for a sharp edge to your inlay.

Did you manage to get this problem sorted?

As has been said posting your crv3d file will help.

Could that just be the quality of the board you are using? Looking at the pictures you have some steps in certain places but they are not all the way around the job as you would expect them to be if there were a difference in z height settings after a tool change. If the board is flexing at all then that may happen. A down-cut bit as well as giving a clean top edge will also give a better finish to the bottom of your pocket
