Clearance passes in V Carve toolpaths

Post by Jerry In Maine »

If I want to mill a pocket with a smooth bottom finish I can (within the Pocket Toolpath options) set a shallow depth for my final pass. Trouble is I can't do that for clearance passes within V-Carve toolpath and I'm getting a rough "bottom" to these areas. Wasting a lot of time sanding them out and it's often difficult depending on the final shape and dept of the cut. Any way to improve this? I'm using a two flute down-spiral bit.

thanks
I'm just a number in a great design

Edit Passes allows you to set the cut depth of the last pass. Doesn't that do what you want?

No "Edit Passes" in V-Carve / Engraving Toolpath.

How about setting the flat depth a little shallower then create a second toolpath to the final flat depth. The second toolpath's tools can have their Pass Depth parameters set to your flat depth so that they don't "air cut". Same procedure as you're doing for normal pocket toolpaths.

The VCarve Toolpath does not have an Edit Passes option.

The VCarve Program and the VCarve Toolpath having the same names often causes confusion. Been there, done that.
