roughing and finishing

Post by mservis »

I have a 3 inch (42 wide x 15 high) slab that I am carving a 3d scene into. My roughing pass tool 0.25 EM. does not go into the letters E, S and A etc... therefore on my finish pass 0.25 Ball nose, attempts to cut carving down the entire 1.8 inch depth. This of course is hard on the tool and my nerves.
My question is I would like to do another roughing pass with a smaller tool such as a 0.125 for my selected vectors but the roughing pass does not rough out the inside of the letters. What can I do to rough out the letters? so that I can run a successful finish pass?
I am only focused on the letters. Thank you

even with 0.125 EM the inside not roughed

A .25 and .125 Ball nose image preview is accurate, but the cut depth is 1.8 inch

In the Roughing Toolpath what is the size of the "Machining Allowance"? How small can you reduce that so that the roughing pass goes in to the problem areas?

the machining allowance is 0.05. I will reduce it and see what happens.

I think if it were me I'd isolate the areas that don't work. Then I'd use a pocketing toolpath making sure that I stop above the 3D model. Perhaps the project to 3D model option might work? I've never used it so I'd defer to others who have.

Thank you for everyone's help. This is the end result. Sometimes when I am so close to a project, I can't see the bigger picture. ..

That looks great, just as a mention I will be at CreekSide April 13th for a week if this was meant for the Creekside Campground in Savannah. That's just too funny.
