3/32" Pilot Holes 3/4" Deep

Post by carbidetooth »

I've been successfully peck drilling 1/8" holes .75 deep in 3/4" MDF using this 1/8" end mill:

https://www.toolstoday.com/v-14248-51766.html

Now I need to do same with 3/32". I haven't found a similar end mill that will go this deep. Can I just chuck up a twist drill in in 3/32" collet and turn spindle speed down? Are there other alternatives?

Always something stumping me it seems! Thanks for assistance y'all can give.

You can get a stubby 3/32 drill, then just drill the hole.

Thanks for confirming Leo. If using a twist bit, would it still be prudent to peck drill?

You only need to peck if it's burning. With such a small hole, the chips will likely not come out and it will burn. Try to drill as fast as possible, as it will help.

Leo, he actually needs a 1705-42

The link you posted comes up with a 1705-29 which is a #29 drill.

I have been looking around for an inexpensive set of screw machine bits for my milling machine, sheesh the things are expensive!

I always used Brad Point Bits in my mill for drilling holes. I get very clean holes with them and do not get burning like I have gotten with end mills.
