trace a full sized diagram of the chair and cut it on the cnc machine
and CO2 laser cut a smaller version of the chair
This was an amazing project, the chair just fits together no glue no fasteners
and when you sit on
it it takes your shape every lump and bump so it feels like
its holding you in a large hand ,
I cannot say enough about this design, I enjoyed
building it for myself ,its in my Rec room
Its from fine woodworking April 1976

Re: trace a plywood slotted chair designed by Gregg Fleishma
That's a cool project and the 3rd party tracing software program looks cool as well. Having said that, it seems like it would be pretty simple to get a good set of vectors by importing the bitmap and drawing it manually in Aspire. They are symmetrical designs and it looks like maybe 1/2 hour to 1 hour's work to draw the vectors for one side and then mirror them to the other and finally resize the result to whatever is required. Maybe I'm missing something but it seems it would be a pretty forgiving design from the point of view of small deviations from the original.

You might be right, i have been using these drawing boards sine 2007-2008 and i find it easy and quick
We all get used to what suits us
I also find when i enlarge the diagram its easier tracing

FYI it is issue 57 March/April 1986 not 1976.

Re: trace a plywood slotted chair designed by Gregg Fleishma
I have fine woodworking on DVD. There is no march 1976, only spring 1976, it was quarterly then. If you look at that issue the article you reference is not there, in fact it was only B&W then.
I did a search on his name and the color article you are showing is in the issue I referenced.
I only providing the correct reference for people who don’t have a way to search back issues like I do. The chair looked interesting so I wanted to read the original article, not embarrass you.

This is a fun (and useful) project, Stan! I’m glad you made the “tiny” version, too! (Pretty Cool!)stankern wrote:trace a full sized diagram of the chair and cut it on the cnc machine

I enjoyed reading the article explaining the prototyping process Mr. Fleishman went through - very interesting!

Re: trace a plywood slotted chair designed by Gregg Fleishma
thanks everyone, it was a very cool chair to make and sit in.
Lots of people that saw it wanted it, its very light and when you sit down you feel its going to let go
but it does not, and it seems to support everything on your backside which feels good
And I was embarrassed on the mistake to the magazine reference, somehow the date was hand written and i never really paid attention
but when it was mentioned i looked it up and yes i was wrong.
But the point is its way back and i have been collecting these magazines for years and going through them i found this chair
contacted Greg and he said it was ok for me to draw it out and cut it but not to sell it.
The design is amazing,it would be idea in a RV as it folds up flat for storage, one could have 4 and it would not take a lot of room.
The little one shows proportion as i just scaled the dxf file to fit an 1/8 in masonite panel or hardboard and it fir perfect
great for doll house furniture.
I then tell friends about the movie "honey i shrunk the kids" and then add i shrunk the full sized chair and here it is !
--vectors you got to love it--
