Text on a chair rail profile

Post by Phil »

Recently I had a few feet of chair rail molding leftover from a job. I decide to make a small box with the molding. I wanted to Vcarve my granddaughters name into the side of the box , a gift for her 9th birthday.
I traced the profile as shown in the photo and measured the thickness at 1/4" intervals. Then I plotted the points in Aspire and drew a contour by connecting the points. I used the Extruding along Centerline modeling tool to create the model of the chair rail. In the VCarve toolpath I selected Project toolpath onto the 3D model option to Vcarve the name onto the chair rail model.
The process worked very well.

I use that technique to do various carvings on pieces of wood slabs. The slabs are free and many have unique features from worm trails and bark staining. The carvings have been popular. I create a component that represents the slabs contours and then add the carved component onto the slab. I only carved the carved component.
