ellipsoid

Post by aaron1869 »

I have a customer that wants me to make an ellipsoid mold. The mold needs to be 3"X28"x28" with a depth of 1 1/2" at the center. I can create a dish that extends from 0" to 1 1/2" at the center. The problem is he needs that slight curve on the outer edge. The only way I could get it, or close, was create a 28" circle with a dot in the center and then use a 2 rail sweep. That created the correct outside edge but gave me a raised center. There must be an easier method.

Thanks

Aaron

Try the moulding toolpath. With this bit: http://www.rockler.com/rockler-flattene ... 2-in-shank it will be much faster than using a 3D toolpath. edit: Oops, I think this will leave the raised spot.
2nd edit: Here's the solution: http://forum.vectric.com/viewtopic.php? ... 32#p188919

Or add a small pocket to the center to get rid of the raised center.

Also, this tutorial should include the information you need, even though the emphasis is on two sided cutting. https://release.vectric.com/clipart_bowl/

Or, search the forums for "bowl" to see what else pops up.

A bowl profile will not work.

The solution was easier then I thought. What I initially did was correct. All I needed to do was drop the model 1/8" below the top. The bit has just enough curve to create an ellipsoid.

The last I knew an ellipsoid was a deformed sphere? Scaling done along one or more of the axis. If there is no scaling, then the object is a sphere. I suppose you could say that a sphere is a special case of ellipsoid.
