Dear Jay

You can model your twist in SketchUp - Then use Export to DXF or STL (Plugin from https://www.guitar-list.com/download-so ... dxf-or-stl) then drop the 3D DXF into Aspire (or Partworks 3D)

The one I've demonstrated has quite big segments you will be able to make them smaller and give you a better resolution.

Sincerely
Martin Reid

Martin,
It's all well and good but your's doesn't have the arc......
I don't know Sketchup so I'm interested to know if you can add the bend to the twist .

Michael

Michael Mezalick has it if you have version 9

SketchUp.. Yes you would be able to 'twist' then bend the 'arc'. The problem is of course having to learn another piece of software. If it was me and I had Version 9, then I would look at Micheal's 'Done with V9 and the wrapped Job Gadget'

Sincerely
Martin

Interesting,
Thanks Martin.
As I said I don't know much about Sketchup ,,, my bent spiral can be done in any version of Aspire that has the wrapped gadget..

I guess if I played with it with a two rail sweep, I could do it in Aspire, but sometimes an outside cad software is faster. 30-seconds with Rhino I came up with this. I couldn't post it as a stl or rhino file, so I attached it as a dxf. See if that works. Gary

Needs to have an arc in it though. That's the issue, it's not a straight post with a 1/4 turn.

Just another few seconds in Rhino. However, just guessing on the degree of arc.

Of course there are several other programs that can do this, I would have used MODO, but for me the challenge was to only use Aspire..
Certainly I'm not the only one that can do that....am I ????

I have made things quite similar to the stair spindle shown earlier. Here is a picture. I'll have to pull up the old file - I ended up using a Multiply sweep to get it to come out right.

Steve,
Correct me if I'm wrong but your designs don't seem to have a bend to them...??

Sorry, missed that.

It should be possible to add a bend by adding a carefully constructed 2-rail sweep that pulls the design down in the middle, but there is a limit to how much of a bend you can do in Aspire. As always, the closer the surface of the part is to the center line, the more distortion you'll get, and if the center line is exposed, Aspire can't handle it.
