It is incredible what you can learn on the 'net.
I was reading "Introduction to End Mills" and found a sentence that said that TiN had a tendency to "gall" with aluminium.
Not being a metalworker, the only thing I knew about Gall had to do with the gall bladder and I was certain this was not what was referred to, so I had to look it up.
In the end I learned why TiN coated bits behaved strangely when used on aluminium.

That is news to me too. We cut a LOT of aluminum - I will watch for that in the future

A quick bit of Googlin' seams to say that. I think it's just plain TiN, and not necessarily other coatings with TiN as an ingredient. I do know the AlTiN (Aluminum Titanium Nitride)... or are they TiAlN??? (they're different) coated bits I use for the 6061-T6 cut beautifully.
