VCarve text into slightly rounded stock?

I need to carve a name into an axe handle which is slightly rounded. Is there a way to set up the tool path so it will carve equal depth at the edges and in the middle?

I would make the letters as small as possible to counter the shallower edge of the letters

I just engraved a wooden cane by making a very shallow pocket cut to flatten only the area for the engraving. Do this in an area least affected by the possible loss of strength caused by the pocketing. I only needed to go about .0625" deep for the pocket I made.

Could you measure the true shape of the handle, and build a model in Aspire? You could then project the text onto the model.
Probably too much work...

I think that the pressbacks are pretty simple and very consistent shapes, so yes, it should work.
I would make a cardboard negative that matches the arch, trace it, and scan it in as a bitmap with 1 vector. Or trace onto graph paper, enter the important coordinates into NotePad and bring them into Aspire using CSV. Use Bezier 'smooth' nodes.

Two rail sweep this to make a 3D model with the right shape. Project the text onto this.

One downside is that the cutter will always be perpendicular to the table, not the material, which will distort the text a bit on slopes. I have put text on a 4" diameter piece with a 0.5" arc, and did not think it was a problem. The previews will tell the truth.

I took the route of modeling a design of the handle in Aspire and projecting the text onto the 3d model. I created a profile pass at .003" so I could see exactly where to place the axe on my table. And made a couple test tool paths of the text so I could see that it would line up correctly. It works just fine.

So thank you all for the tips and suggestions.

if it isn't too late, I would put a comma after the 6, before the 2014
