aspire rises to the challenge!

Post by rej »

recently this rope was posted on another forum showing the power of a competitor.
it was done with a feature we don't have, per sey, an extrusion feature.

so me being me, i had to try to duplicate it.
i tried a few times with no success, but i have a secret weapon - routnabout.
so i emailed a pic to him, and wahlah, he did it easily with a two rail sweep.

don will be at my camp in june and he will be showing how he did this with the distort feature.

sometimes its not what you know, but who you know! if you get stuck, send him a pm.

Rej,

very nice! and yes it is a challange. I won't share how I did it (don't want to spoil your fun). I will say this I did use a two rail sweep but it wasn't easy (for me).

Now that the sign camp has concluded can you share the rope twist technique? I'm very interested and have been quite patient. :D Thanks

Rej,

The file is bigger than 5 meg, it is about 8 meg. If you want I can email it to you, a good TIF, is about 7 meg, and a .bmp is about 146K zipped, i will shrink it down to 6 in and post it here. If you get the CRV file you can see the single segment drawing, then you can sculpt the single segment, then circular array it to get the final rope. When it got baked it his the sculpt part, but is just using the add at full strength, with a small circle, and make a pass at an angle on the smooth segment.

Hi Roy, Thanks for the reply. That's a nice rope, I was hoping to learn the technique. Would you mind sharing that? I'm just trying to improve my modeling skills.

Thanks for the help.

Hey Jim,
Create a new file at the resolution of your choice.
Import your bitmap. I then center the image in the material. (makes things easier when you go to circular array your component)
Once oriented. I created a closed vector the shape of one of the wires.
create a closed vector the shape of one of the wires
create a closed vector the shape of one of the wires
Then I created a circular array of the vector. You'll have to experiment with the number of items to get the look your after. Slightly overlapping the vectors. (this will give you an accurate number of components - once I know the quantity for the array, I delete all the close vectors except the one for the component)
screencap_096.jpg
Use the node editing feature to adjust the closed vector shape so the components will overlap slightly
Use the node editing feature to adjust the closed vector shape so the components will overlap slightly
screencap_098.jpg
Using the Create Shape and the closed vector you made, create your shape, again to your height that fits your need.
Once the component is created, use the Array Copy. (Remember centering the bitmap image - This will help because it will array the component around the center of the material).
Now you have the wire rope. Bake your components and then play with the height of the baked component.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Don,

I think my approach is way too over thought (as I do quite often). I'll share it anyway because I think I found an interesting effect. Will need some time to expain though.

Thanks again

Rej,

Since quite a few people have asked about the rope. I put one segment. Posting 26 segments was more than 3 meg, and could not post it. Here is how I did the rope.

Here is the file with only 1 rope vector, and one model segment. Your rope picture, had 26 strands, so just choose the model segment and choose 26 in the Circular Array and it will be assembled. Right click components, or group all of them together, one and choose merge. You can see that there is a lot of overlap, but you have to remember that you are drawing in 3D. When you visualize the rope in 3D, you will see that you only see about 30 to 35 percent of the rope strand. You still have to draw the whole strand, then overlap it just as the rope is made, and you will get a pretty close rendition of the rope. A lot of times if you draw what you see, it does not always turn out exactly as intended, you will get artifacts, or something just a little different.
