Raster versus contour 3d rough or finish

Post by paulmoore »

Hello,
Is there a way to change the raster travel path from across the board to a contour travel that follows the cuts radially from a point?
Seems the only way I get this is to create a toolpath is the path the goes raster across the board from edge to edge.
The pic shows the toolpath going up and down on the slope and as the curve continues the toolpath ends up going across the slope which could cause variations in the final surface that could ruin the symmetry.
I mention this because the 3drough icon shows the cuts going around the dome. At least it looks that way.
Thank you in advance.

Closest thing would be to use an offset toolpath strategy rather than raster, but that's still not going to always give you a smooth side on compound curves like you're showing. You can also change the direction of the raster movement to some angle that better fits the drawing, and break the drawing down into multiple areas to be carved (using boundary vectors) so that you can have multiple raster angles.

What you're describing sounds like "waterline" carving, which isn't available in the Vectric products at this time.

Thank you . I changed the angle to 50 in the toolpath and it is as close as I can get it within the functions of the product.
Its looks very good.

Could you post a screenshot of the parameters of the 3D Roughing 1 toolpath?

It seems to me that the purpose of 3D roughing toolpath is not too look like the final model so symmetry, etc. is not a worry. That's the province of 3D finishing toolpaths.

Thank you for the moulding direction. I am very happy with this and is takes 29 minutes for the 3 rails. It is a very clean ramp.

This is what is going to the table.

I believe I have found a bug:
I have a Warthog table of 4 foot x 8 foot. 48 inches by 96 inches, 1219.2mm by 2438.4mm.
My job is in millimeters.
When I set the machine table size in millimeters the machine tool envelope shows the 48x96 in millimeters.
When I set the machine table size in inches the machine tool envelope shows correctly.

Are you importing SVG vectors?

I believe I have found a bug:
A bug in which program Aspire or this Flash Cut? Either way you probably haven't.

It would be far more useful if you could provide the mm and inch g-code files as written by Aspire.

I made a smaller uncomplicated design.
I tried the gcode tap save of inches and mm. The mm gives error on xyz. The inch gives error on z.
Here is the Aspire file, the import object and the GCode.

The steps are I have a project that I change between inches and millimeters.
I save the gcode in millimeters or inches to change the error.
Thank you in advance.

First of all, if all you are importing is a polygon vector with 16 sides you would be better served just drawing it using the polycon tool in Aspire. I ran your file and the only error I received was that the tool will cut through the material and into the spoilboard. If that's the only error message you are getting also then just set the depth of cut equal to the thickness of the material. You can to that by just typing a "z" (no quotes) in the depth of cut box.

Also, be advised that new users that claim they have found a "bug" in the software is looked on dimly here on the forum and usually results in a lack of understanding of how the program works. Do a little more research and be sure you understand the program and its capabilities before making such a claim.

  • can you post the mm tap file?
  • what post processors are you saving with?
  • what controller: Fagor, Mitsubishi, Fanuc?
  • for the inches file: what is the error on Z "it" gives?

The main effort here is to integrate the Aspire tap output to the Flashcut router software.
The options to work both in English and metric are there.
In Aspire I produce files of both measurement units and read in both to Flashcut.
Seems as though the option switch in Flashcut doesnt take so for the time being I am sticking with english/inches.
This selection reduces the router error to 0.8 Z+ error.
I am in Aspire trying to locate that number or some others that might make that be in line 5 of the tap file G0Z0.8000.
It looks like the Aspire wants to start the run at the given jump height of 0.8 above the project surface.
Normally I start at Z=0 and the run lifts up to the jump height.
This is my first effort to import objs to Aspire.
Before in Aspire I would simply draw a border, add some text, create the toolpath and be done the job with no errors just doing simple signs.
The controller is Flashcut. The package is the hardware and software.

The output processor is G-code(inch) *.tap
I eventually would like to be able to switch back and forth between english and metric for flexibility.
