Threading
Threading
Anyone know if its possible to set-up mason-jar type threading paths using Aspire's built-in threading feature?
Jar-thread types are identified by names such as 33-400, 48/400, 53/400 and many others.

Re: Threading
What sort of thread do they have?
If they have a fairly standard V type threads then there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to as long as you can buy a thread-cutting tool with the right angle if you are looking to match existing threads

Re: Threading
There will be an issue of the threads not working on a real mason jar for part of the year due to seasonal wood movement.

Re: Threading
One could make the thread a bit oversize or use plywood.
I find the idea of decoratively carved jar lids for gifts etc. quite interesting.
Probably needs a liner for liquid contents.

Re: Threading
Well, here is one for a real mason jar with (approx.) 2.5" throat diameter:

It could probably be done with the threading tool path but I found it easier to create such an unusual thread with the fluting tool path.
This one requires a typical (and inexpensive) 1/2" diameter x 3/16" height keyhole bit with 1/4" shank.
This was a quick experiment, and the thread shape can surely be improved. But it does work.

Re: Threading
I look forward to checking that out. Thanks. Hmm… If we created a think-tank with Tailmaker and FixitMike imagine the problems we could solve!

Re: Threading
Just opened your file and ran the simulations.
How did you create the death spiral for the keyhole?
The other 3 toolpaths in the keyhole toolpath say 1/2" EM.
So can I assume the 3 that say 1/2" EM are a real 1/2" EM and the keyhole listed as 1/2"em is the 1/2" keyhole?
Keyhole gadget normally only does straight lines, How did you do?
Keyhole starts and ends in same place, did they change the way Keyhole gadget works?

Re: Threading
Looks and the post above confirms that this was done not via the “Keyhole Gadget” but rather via a fluting toolpath. Not all keyhole bit usage requires said gadget.
I’d say he drew two circles, split the big one at the top quadrant, split the smal one at top and bottom quadrants, then recombined them into one interlinked double circle.

Yes, that kind of how it works.adze_cnc wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 10:02 pmLooks and the post above confirms that this was done not via the “Keyhole Gadget” but rather via a fluting toolpath. Not all keyhole bit usage requires said gadget.

Actually, all of the 1/2" tool paths are done with the keyhole bit to save another tool change. As long as the depth of cut is less than the flute height and the bit is bottom cutting, it does not make a difference to an endmill. And the simulation can unfortunately not display the thread undercut anyway (hint, hint Vectric).
This was a quick feasibility test. I am working on a somewhat refined version with a more precise thread and better shape. If that looks good, I will post it in the gallery section.
