An epoxy spin on Todd's Hidden Mantel Message Project

Post by BrooksM »

Thank you Todd for the inspiration.

There was a little more clean up from the V-Carve shavings then expected.
Do you think it could be the feed rate was to slow and/or spindle speed to high?

Thanks Marcel,
Good call it should have been azure in color, maybe semi-turquoise.

Looks good to me

Faster feed rate & slower spindle speed, single or two flute bit?

Most important really was that you aren't clearing the chips which leads to recutting & heat build-up, my extraction system is not the best so when I am cutting acrylic I rig up an airline which blows onto the bit, this clears the chips & also helps to keep the bit cool
Just a gentle blow, just enough to evacuate the cut chips.

Hi Martin,

Thanks,
Precise Bits 30° V-Bit .015 Tip, .25 Dia #EM2E4-2500-30V is 2 flutes. Your airline solution is a great idea.
What psi are you running and is the nozzle one of those articulating hoses?
Yes, heating seems to be the issue.

I don't have anything fancy, just an odd piece of reinforced plastic hose & a ball valve, pressure isn't that important, I don't set the output from the compressor to anything special I don't want to blast the chips all over the workshop just remove them from the cutting area   I just zip tie the hose in place aimed at the tip of the bit I am using & open the ball valve enough that it moves the chips away from the cut.
Actually making something a little better is one of those jobs on a long list that I never get around to  One of the nozzles you mentioned would work much better as it would be far easier to direct, I have one in a box somewhere that I bought for that purpose & who knows might actually get round to doing something with it one day

FYI
Resolved the gumming issue with an increased feed rate of 100 ipm and slower spindle speed of 12000 rpm.
Although, an up-cut 30° V-Bit might minimized the packing of the shavings along with Martin's air system.
