Drop Tool Option education not whoops event

Post by ohiolyons »

Im trying to find out more about the Drop Tool option. The vectric documentations says:

Drop Tool When projecting a toolpath onto the model, drop the tool on surface rather than project. If this is
set, the toolpath will follow the surface of the model better, but could be slower to calculate.

So you can't Google Drop Tool because all you get is Whoops events and/or tool changer dropping tools.

Do I equate on surface with the actual model?
If so what is rather than the project?

I guess I always assumed projecting was to the model? It does say Project 3d toolpath onto 3d model.

i was hoping someone would have some external documentation on what was actually going on.

That seems to be how, internally, the program figures out which method the “Project to 3D” toolpath option is calculated (i.e. the mathematical model). The actual “Project to 3D” works the same in both cases it’s just the output resolution that is altered (for the better apparantly).

With the cersion 11.5 usage of multi-threads and GPU it would seem that setting the option to Yes or True makes sense. Better surface-following at the expense of some calculation time. But, as the program is much quicker than the old single-threaded non-GPU versions that should be an acceptable trade-off.
