removing bottom portion of component

Post by inflms656 »

Hi, I have a model made up of an empty cylinder .5"tall (Z) with .125" walls sitting on a solid base that is .125" tall (Z)and a bit wider than the cylinder. I ran a rectangular column up the the exterior wall of the cylinder but only want to keep the top .125" of this rectangular component with the lower portion of the rectangular component completely removed. I tried putting it on a new level with the level having a higher base height, every option and position of combine mode in between all other components and many other things, probably just missing some slight aspect that is screwing me up as I feel like this is a fairly basic operation but i am boggled. thanks in advance for any help.

I don't model in Aspire but I suspect that you'll need to change the job settings to "double-sided" if it is currently "single-sided".

Not got the software on this computer but have a look at the modeling icons for slicing & replace below, guessing it would probably be the replace below you want if I understand what your saying

I'm not sure if I'm following you correctly, but if you draw a vector across where you want to cut, then use the "Split the selected component using a vector" icon (scissor under modeling tools).

If I understand what you want, I can think of three ways.

Clear area of selected component outside of vectors

or

Level Clipping

or

scissors icon like Gary said.
I didn't know it would work that way, I learned something new yeah!!!!

Just depends on ultimate goal. Do you want it to go away with minimal cleanup steps or do you need the extra piece for something else.

should have posted a picture maybe im designing it wrong in the 2d portion as i cannot remove with vectors this way, so im trying to remove below the cursor of the highlighted component

Posting the file would help greatly.

Is this an imported STL or a series of components you drew?

Are you trying to get rid of the circular base too?

If so replace below is what you are looking for.

If you want to keep the circular base and it is a separate component then turn it off and do a Replace Below on the rest.
Then the circular base back on.

I don’t know, you did mention the cylinder was rising in the vertical (z axis) and this is, more or less, how I envisioned it. I missed the part about the whole lot being on a base though. Remember that the program can’t deal with undercuts.

It is a series of components and i understand about the undercut issue thank you for making sure i did. I will try removing the base and replace below thank you for all the suggestions everyone first time really using the forum sorry if im complicating the issue at hand

If it is a series of components then can't you just alter the shape height for each of the components that you wish to reduce the height of? If you have kept them all as individual components then that should be possible, if you have baked them all together to form one component then this would be a good example of making sure you have a copy of each component before baking anything
