Need Help with pocket Toolpath

I have been having trouble figuring out how to pocket around a 3d model. Every time I try to do it, it removes the top surface of the 3d model down to the level of the pocket. How do you clear material around the 3d model and not the model itself? Thank you for the help!

You need to control the cut area with vectors. Draw a vector around the 3d part. draw another vector to create the other boundary. Then select those vectors to create the pocket tool path.
