Error righting to readme txt error

Post by Leo »

I tried to upgrade to 11.008 yesterday

After the upgrade when trying to run Aspire - Aspire would hang up.
I tried over and over with the same issue.
I rebooted - several times
I uninstalled Aspire then reinstall
I got an error message - see pic
I rebooted - redownloaded Aspire - several times - same problem
I spend time cleaning up the hard drive
I manually deleted all aspire 11 files
I tried again to download Aspire 11 and reinstall
SAME ERROR
I save the original 11.003 download and got the same error
I had installed 11.003 when it first became available - no issue
I upgraded to each upgrade thru 11.007
I still have Aspire 10.515 installed and that runs fine
I am pretty sure it's something in my computer - but I don't know what
I have ONLY windows Defender - and I temporarily shut it off on my last try

I use Process Explorer for issues like that - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/sysint ... s-explorer

You can use the Find menu option to search for "Aspire.exe" and it will tell you all the processes that have that file held open.

The SysInternals suite is great for troubleshooting, I've been using many of the programs for years well before Microsoft bought them out.

I forgot about restore point.

I was getting ready to reinstall windows 11, but that would have uninstalled ALL my apps.

I did a restore point to when I installed Adobe Reader 9/28/21

Aspire 11.007 came back, with an update message that 11.008 is available.

I updated my shop computer yesterday to 11.008 with no issue.

After fussing with my office computer for so many frustrating hours, I will not update yet. I need to just walk away from this for a while. It will stay on 11.007 for a few more days.

Computers cab be a real PITA sometimes.

NOPE - no cigar

I thought I was OK - but NO

Aspire did not have any post processors and when I tried to load them, it didn't work

I then uninstalled Aspire and tries to reinstall

SAME ERROR message

Digging as deep into a computer as you are suggesting is not my paygrade. I am not afraid to try anything.

At this point I am dead in the water.

I downloaded the Process Manager and I did do the search for Aspire.exe
There were no matching Items
The list came up empty.

I have no idea what to do except reformat the hard drive and reinstall windows, and that is not what I want to do.

Leo,

If you can open Aspire, open the tool database and connect online. On the upper right side in the machine selection, select your machine, then click on the download tool database from the server. That should download the post processors and the tool database and install them

With the amount of issues you're getting and the fact that the file can't be deleted and nothing is holding it open I would suspect a fault with the drive you're using.

Open up an explorer window. Right click on the drive in the left hand window and choose Properties/Tools/Error Checking and see what comes up.

Yes - I tried that and it would not work.
I don't remember what happened - error or whatever
I have tried so many things now.

Adrian,

It shows nothing wrong.

I am suspecting that I have done something stupid at some point and made windows perform badly.

It is a pain to reload Windows 10 but that may be my best option.

I really hate trying to fix this more than I hate reloading windows and all my software.

I still have my shop computer and my laptop.

Unless you have some idea, I am just going to take that route.

I think it may be the "cleanest" way to go.

What really irks me is that Aspire 10.5 operates just fine.
I cannot reinstall Aspire 11 from the files I saved in July.
Nothing else seems to be an issue.
Weird!!

WOW - that was painful

I uninstalled a LOT of stuff
Did a LOT of disk cleanup
Searched C: for Aspire - deleted all files I could find
Searched C: Vectric - deleted all files I could find
More Disk cleanup
More rebooting

Finally - I redownloaded - Reinstalled

Finally back up and running Aspire 11.008

I created a NEW restore point

Whew - I don't ever want to do THAT ever again.
BUT - hey - this is computer world.
Someday - not in my lifetime - these things will be foolproof.

Leo,
I feel your pain. Just a couple of weeks ago I had to do the same. I keep good backups though so I didn't have any data loss. Since I like to play around with the OS and programs that may be risky I usually do a fresh reinstall every couple of years anyway. I was an IT systems administrator for the University of Arizona before I retired so reformatting and reinstalling is no big deal but it does take a lot of time. I guess if I was really diligent I could image the drive after reinstalling all of the programs to make the process a little less time consuming. Then there's all of those remembered passwords in the web browser and all of the Windows updates (ugh). Now I'm looking forward to Windows 11.

Steve,

I am not an IT person but it is not that big of a deal to reformat and reinstall, but I did it in March 2020. I did that with Win95 and all the way up to Win10.

I have a 16 Tb NAS where I store ALL my data files.
I also have a 16 Tb external hard drive to backup the NAS
Inevitably - something ends up on the desktop, or in my documents on the hard drive, but not much.

My office desktop, workdesk computer, laptop, Dianes computer, my laser machine computer, CNC machine computer ALL take data from the server. Now, I will be adding another one to operate the MAXNC 10 cnc machine, but that one is going to get sold.

I have no idea what the fix was, but it got fixed.

How is windows 11 going to fix the passwords issue? I have tones of them in an indexed notebook.

I don't think Windows 11 will do much for passwords. I was referring to the web browser and the remembered passwords for all of the websites. I'm using Firefox and it does have a "Master Password" function although I've never used it. It's kind of like a lookup list. You type in the master password and Firefox substitutes it with the correct password for that particular website.

I just do not trust any form of digital or online password savings.

I have a folder on my desk that is pen and paper.
It is alphabetically tabbed.
I manually keep all my password data there.
It cannot be hacked that way.

I just don't trust any of them out there - not even Apple, which I don't use anyway.
