Where does a ramp start?

Post by DHDeitrick »

Consider the following tool path:
Pocket cutting .125" (~3mm)
Raster along grain of material
Ramp Plunge moves checked: Distance = 4"
Safe Z = .2" (~5mm)
Start Position: x=0, y=0, Z=1.5 (~38mm)
Z Zero set on surface of material

What happens?
Spindle motor starts spinning.
Gantry moves to the starting position of the pocket.
Cutting starts.

Question: At what height from Z zero does the ramp start
a. Safe Z and drop -> .125+ .2 (Safe Z) going down over 4"?
b. Z Zero? -> Z drops to surface of material then ramps .125" over 4"
c. Something else?

Thanks for your input,
dd

The ramp starts at the surface of the material which is z-zero in this case. You haven't specified a start depth in the toolpath so all cutting operations (including the ramp) will start at the surface. It will start at 0 and ramp down to 0.125 over 4". If the part is smaller than 4" then the toolpath will continue ramping in the opposite direction until the 4" travel distance is up.

That is what I thought. Starting depth is 0, by the way.

Thanks
