20 hours for a 5"x7" carve. I have one that shows 19+hours of carve but that was on a much larger workpiece. I guess I won't be able to qualify for the knucklehead club. I won't worry about that since I have to convince that mean woman I live with to let me upgrade my Aspire package. Yes, she's the same one that made me buy my current CNC. Go figure!

19+hours of carve
Probably still faster than a mallet and chisel.

The laser module was a good start last summer, but it lacks some important features (like Z height settings). Is that module also going to have an update at the same time?
Looking forward to the new version....soon? :-)

✨3D REST MACHINING ✨

3D rest machining uses multiple tools to efficiently optimize machining time, material removal and tool lifespan. What's not to like?! 🤭

#sneakpeek 👀

As much as they try to speed up machining times, there will still always be those knuckleheads that take 20 hours to do a 5"x7" carve.
Not everyone has been doing 3D for a long time. There are plenty of ins and outs to learn, especially for a newbie. It take a while to learn what a good baseline is.

I am proud to be a knucklehead running a .25mm TBN for details on a small carve 😁

I have a machine that is capable or pretty fast feed rates and some of my carvings still take 15 - 20 hours. So, yeah, I'm proud to be one of those "knuckleheads." It's the nature of 3D carvings to take a long time to carve and those who think otherwise just don't understand the cnc process.

I wasn't going to post as it's off the topic, but no offense to antique Harley owners...
Proud to be in the "Knuckleheads Club":)

If a certain model artist goes to the trouble to put tiny Celtic designs and skin texture on a model,
it's only fair to do the model justice. IF this had been a 5X7", it would almost qualify.
9.13.17 DRAGON ON MACHINE UNTOUCHED.jpg
Just finished a 19.5 hr cut(just the Finish toolpath), but for my Mother, and it will be passed down.
I'd HATE to say "I could have done better, but it would have taken 8 hours more."
6.22.21 MOM'S HARLEY SIZE COMPARISON.jpg
Likewise for a cut for myself, and look at it for a couple decades, and say
"I WISH I had taken the time to...."
This model maker went to the time and trouble to put a very expressive old man's face,
fringe on his jacket,desiccation on the skull, etc.
I'm not about to give the man a botox and facelift!!
He EARNED the wrinkles! :)
.25mm TBN only gave the suggestion of some of the details, so had to go a 30 degree engraving bit
with a .005" flat on a separate cut to get them. HE definitely put me in the "Club"!
Did use model boundary vectors, did use 3D settings and max speed for my machine,
And every little chip was a detail the .25mm TBN couldn't get at.

That purty much says it all, Scott, about you and about the craft.

PS. All my younger life I was called a "Knucklehead" when I screwed up. I was much older when I realized it wasn't a derogatory remark. My Daddy rode a Harley AKA Knucklehead until he laid it over in some loose gravel.

PPS. Now my grandson is getting that badge a little too often! :lol:

I admit that I will often run a really fine stepover on a ball nose finish toolpath. The time to carve goes way up. I guess that makes me a Knucklhead too. I will proudly wear that badge with honor. :)

Thanks all!! :)
Originally "Shaman" on that Maple blow down was Just to dial in a new 1.5mm TBN,
AND all my estimates for the "Harley" were 22-24 HOURS.
SO I was tweaking a 3D machine settings(different than my machine's defaults) on a large cut
TRYING to get my cut times down(my usual cuts are fairly small).
This is Shopbot's machine language, but just to give you an idea;
BRADY'S VR TUNING 3D FILLIN SHEET.jpg
BRADY'S VR TUNING 3D.jpg
And finally got a little better and got my scale factor down from 2.2 to 2.4, down to 1.6 to 1.8 :)
(SOME tweaks made the cut WAY to "Jerky"
so I settled for as fast as I could, and still smooth movement)
BUT kept liking the way the cut was coming as I got into the wood...and decided it was for ME! :)
It got Mom's "Harley" down 2-4 hours per toolpath :)

Probably would have continued to the 30 degree engraving on the Harley, except even in 6 hours
the humidity had gone up 40% and the edges of the Maple had swelled up .04".
I had 4 areas I was going to boundary vector cut, but being off just a hair would have destroyed details
and probably left witness marks.
Definitely worth the time to go .25mm TBN, as every time she comes over she says;
"Ooh...I LOVE feeling the chain links!!"
6.20.21 1MM TBN BRUSHED OILED closer.jpg
6.22.21 MOM'S HARLEY OFF MACHINE 3 BOTTOM  CLOSE.jpg
Even MORE off topic;
Her father opened a Harley shop 99 yrs ago, They look different know compared to Gramp's first bike;
Gramp's first 1921 HARLEY.jpg
So that side of the family..."Knucklehead" meant you rode a 1936-1947 Harley....
and if used derogatorily, you got a talking to about Flatheads/ Knuckleheads/and Panheads :)
SO not often a term used unless talking Harley in my youth!
Probably a Knucklehead in the pic in 1938 with my Mom in the middle of the sidecar. :)
mom in middle sidecar maybe 1938.jpg
OH ....Just for people who like Harleys, a copy of a biz letter from my Gramp.
Gramp biz letter.jpg
MY how prices have changed! :)

Like is commonly said, 3D is usually a compromise between the time and details.
IF you've got a detailed model and won't compromise.....well, "you made your bed................" :)

Becki and Stephanie......PLEASE get this thread Back on Track!! :D :D

I was running a toolpath yesterday.

I was standing there explaining to my friend how Version 11 was going to drastically cut the Rough 3D time down by not recutting the same path over and over.

I also will be doing a Mermaid program for a client whereas the arm is a separate piece which will use another really nice feature of V11.
