Create a Wedge Shape

Post by Soapyjoe »

Hi Everybody,
This may sound simple but at the moment it is giving me some grief
I wish to cut our a simple shape ... in this case an ellipse ... then machine the complete face with a slight taper (say 4 degrees) from left to right.... a sort of elliptical shaped wedge.
I have .... but only at the design stage ...attempted to do this with the "Chamfer tool " but the results, in the preview, look rather "weird"
I am sure there is a simple answer but, at the moment, it is evading me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if it is the best or fastest..... I created an oval vector, created the shape with Create Shape to set the shape height, and used Tilt in the properties to set a left to right tilt of 4 degrees.

I'd also like to see an answer with the chamfer tool. I couldn't get it quite right, so I went with the model-making route. For a one-off, that's OK, but the chamfer would be way quicker. ......MAYBE NOT.. I checked my time and it's only 2:09 with the model chamfer using a 0.5" ball nose!!

Thanks gkas
That is exactly what I want .
I will now experiment with the route you suggest
If some kind person can come up with a "Chamfer Toolpath" solution I am still interested to learn.
I find this forum great ... working entirely on my own its great to know somebody is out there.

Hi kgas,

I have just done some preliminary trials ... but I am getting rather stuck!
I draw the oval
Select modelling tools
Set up the various heights and surfaces
But, when I come to "Tilt" ... this is "greyed out"
I have downloaded your programme but I am still bewildered as to how you set the tilt angle
Where am I going wrong?

Not sure why a chamfer is a desirable solution. Doesn't make any sense to me.

If I was doing this, I would probably use a moulding toolpath to machine a rectangular tilted area with a precisely defined angle, then cut the oval out of that area. Unless, of course, you were trying to limit the amount of material that gets machined.

In that case, I'd use a 2-rail sweep to define a rectangular component with the exact angle, then draw the oval, clear the area of the component outside the oval and then generate a carving toolpath using the oval as a boundary.

Haven't tried it yet, but saved Vectric's Greg K's example file of a tilted Zero Plane for the future.
Wonder if it would work;

Watch Create Shape Guide 3D Modeling https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRSiuooZufE. Tilt is explained at 06:51. It's a great video to watch. LOTS of ideas. Two Rail Sweep is also a great way to model this. That's the wonderful part of Vectric, many ways to accomplish the same finished product.

Make some free time to watch ALL of the tutorials. It may not all sink in on the first watch, but you'll remember the process is available when you're trying to decide on a solution. I still get amazed how much I missed in previous viewings.

You could use the Moulding Toolpath.

Sorry Soapyjoe that I'm not answering your original question as I'm just a VCP'er,
but I was interested in that tilted Zero Plane as a sloped surfacing/pocketing option.
Nice thing for us as it also gives us a 3D surface to VCarve on, and already thinking I can use it on my firewood/branches etc. :)
It Does work...Thank you Greg K !!
First tried cutting out of the sloped surface like Steve mentioned, and then just clearing the shapes .
Sorry it's so down and dirty, but time out of bed is still restricted, so kept all of Greg's basics.

Hi Everybody,
I greatly appreciate all your kind assistance ...the jury is still out as to the method I use
At the moment I am busy preparing the blanks prior to starting machining ... I will make trials at this point
What I am making is a Maori Koru and for this I estimate I will need 90 different shaped ellipses each tapered to 8 degrees (two full revolutions) The final assembly will be approximately 300mm in diameter
Most examples of Maori Koru, that one sees, are carved from solid hardwood or for the smaller ones Jade or other semi-precious materials ... However, my carving abilities are not up to a project such as this but, with a lot of help from a CNC and Vectric I have in the past machined some very complicated objects.
Thanks once again
Soapy

Thanks for attaching the Greg K file.

Is there a video associated with the Greg K Tilted Zero Plane file.

I'm trying to locate it and just realized I maybe looking for something that doesn't exist.

I've looked on YouTube and poking around the Portal and can't seem to find it.

Thank in advance.

Hi John,
I just renamed the file for attribution and a description....not sure if it was ever covered by itself.
I just saved it on this desktop as it sounded Very interesting...and it IS for me! :)
Greg also mentioned in this thread using Multiply Mode which I'll have to play with :)

No problem John:)
That's why I look on all topics even if I only have VCP. :)
Hopefully won't take another year
to add TWO(or more?) tilted Planes and see what "curves" he was talking about!! :)
