It's been a long time..

Post by Mobius »

It has been ages since I posted on here last. Almost two years ago I branched off from my day job and started my own electrical contracting company. I've been decently successful at that, but it does suck up all of my free time.

Because of this, a year ago my father-in-law Jim and I decided to shut down the 'for profit' part of our little hobby woodworking/cnc business, and just focus on our own projects. Deadlines and budgets and difficult customers really don't make for much fun.

A month later he was diagnosed with cancer, and three weeks after that he was gone.

Suffice it to say that getting back into that shop has been difficult for me, but I've slowly been working back into it. My project at the moment is to build Jim an urn. Which brings me to the reason for this post:

I'd like to incorporate some CNC work into the urn, and the idea I've come up with involves a 3D relief of a motorcycle riding off into the sunset. Is there anyone on here still who I can contract to draw the relief up for me? I'm happy to pay whatever the cost is.

See attached for a picture that embodies what I'm looking for.

Here is a quick and Dirty V-Carve Pro V-Carve toolpath Simulation on a painted board black with white areas as the toolpaths.

Not exactly a relief carving but this might look well carved/etched in an edge lit acrylic with some type of spotlight aimed at the back to represent the sun.
Just a Thought!

Thanks,

Ya, I can vectorize it and do it as a v-carve. For what I have in mind though, a relief would work much nicer. I haven't found any suitable commercially available models that are similar to that yet.

I had a little extra time on Sunday night and hadn't done any modeling for awhile, so spent some time. This is as far as I got. Now that the work week is on us my time is limited to finish it, but could work on it on and off over the next week or two. I don't know what your timeframe is...let me know if you'd like it to continue.

Wow, that's looking awesome! I'm not in a huge hurry, if you think that you could get it in the next few weeks then I would appreciate it greatly.

So I ended up going out to the shop with some measurements but not much else. I started cutting and gluing and it evolved into a simple box with a framed front and some engraving. I tried to use as many of the shop tools as possible in the construction, as a sort of tribute.

His one request was that he wanted to be able to see out of it, so that he could be placed on the mantle and keep an eye on my mother-in-law. So the mirrored engraving is actually mirror tinted acrylic. Opaque from the outside, but translucent on the inside.

Turned out nice anyway, he would have liked it.
