Re: Puzzle Joint Generator
Here's my latest iteration using Tailmaker's puzzle software. This is my MIL's Christmas present. I figure that the texture will help her, as her vision is poor. I had 3 earlier iterations using different negative allowances. This one is -0.05 mm, which is still a bit loose. For contrast -0.1 mm worked well for 3 mm Baltic Birch.
The lion is from Vectric's Clipart library, cut with a 1/8" BN.Joe Federer

Re: Puzzle Joint Generator
NICE Joe!
How thick was the Walnut, and what was your choice of bit??
Conventional or Climb cut making much of a difference?
Wondering if a Spiral Ramped cutout with a low pass depth would make much difference also?
You guys are inspiring me to try to make a thick as possible 3D puzzle
Your Site just keeps getting better Joe!
LIKE the software add-on on the site also!!
Thanks!!

Re: Puzzle Joint Generator
Thanks Scott!
The walnut is 20mm thick. The model was 5.321 mm, set for the top of the block. I used a 1/4" EM for the roughing pass in a Z level pass and a 1/8" BN for the finish pass in Raster. The puzzle was cut with a 1/8" EM in a Conventional cut. I didn't try Climb cut in this case. There was only a bit of chip-out, nothing to worry about in this case. Her vision is really quite bad!
20 mm is about as deep as I go with a 1/8" bit. I've broken a few trying to push it deeper.
Go for it! Each step of this process has been a learning opportunity!
I've been remiss on updating the website (apart from adding G's page) but I'm starting on the "real" version of the fountain so the next few weeks should be "interesting". Maybe I'll document the entire process on a dedicated page. Hhhmmm...

Re: Puzzle Joint Generator
I downloaded the Puzzle Joint Generator today, but my version doesn't have any way to set an offset. Do I do it by changing the bit diameter? I am using the Hoop or Disc selection. I tried cutting without an offset and the pieces are too tight.

Re: Puzzle Joint Generator
You set it in the toolpath.

Re: Puzzle Joint Generator
You save a DXF out of the joint software and import that into VCarve or Aspire. It's there that you set up the offset when you create the tool paths.

Re: Puzzle Joint Generator
I know this is an older post. But, are they planning on creating a Gadget for this at Vectric ? I would enjoy and use this kind of Gadget to use. Thanks for any replies.

Why do you need a gadget for this? It prepares a file complete and ready for import.Fred Grover wrote: ↑Sun Jan 10, 2021 9:20 pmI know this is an older post. But, are they planning on creating a Gadget for this at Vectric ? I would enjoy and use this kind of Gadget to use. Thanks for any replies.

Re: Puzzle Joint Generator
I thought about making this a gadget but I am not familiar with the tools and I am not sure how good the graphics support in the gadget development tools is. As gkas mentioned, there would not be much of a practical advantage or simplification of the process and having it a separate app with common .dxf output avoids possible incompatibility issues with future Vectric software versions.
That said, if somebody wants to play with it, I would be happy to provide the algorithms or even the entire source code. Be aware, the math is rather complicated. Actually, I have a hard time myself to understand anymore what I programmed a few weeks ago
FWIW, I am not aware that Vectric is even thinking about such a puzzle gadget.

Tailmaker Thank You!
I finally finished the granddaughters Birthday present. I turned her favorite Christmas ornament into a puzzle.
