Thread milling
Just experimenting with the thread milling toolpath, these aren't finished yet but not looking to bad so far. 19mm oak so done in 3 pieces. Just given them a coat of sanding sealer so finish sanding & top coat still to do.

Re: Thread milling
Thanks, need to work on my speed & feed settings I was way to conservative as you can see by the burning on the threads
With these I just used a small ring of a darker coloured wood to fill the gap at the bottom of the thread, next try will be to leave a small recess in the lid to do the same thing.
Already thought of another way which I think may work, using a square thread cutting tool to produce an undercut at the base of the threads, just need to sort out some pennies as these bits aren't the cheapest

Re: Thread milling
I use a slotting cutter to produce the recesses.
Not that I do much threading, was on kind of a threading kick a few years ago. I bought an el cheapo set of slotters from HF that has one it at .062 inch.

Re: Thread milling
That one was done with the same bit that Vectric used in the tutorial, someone posted a link in another thread & the Company had a UK branch so I just ordered from them.fretsman68 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2020 10:50 amVery nice work, Martin! May I ask which cutter you chose?
However I have been looking into this a bit more & I am not sure just now if I could have bought something more suitable. It has a 3/4" diameter which means that you can't cut internal threads at under 1 inch (might be more) because of the physical size & the lead in & lead out required. I am now looking at other bits that are available in the UK which would be suitable for smaller threads. I have a mill as well as the router so may end up with different bits for both machines.
Ted, funny you should mention slot cutters because the same thought came to me a couple of hours ago. I already have slot cutters at different sizes which came with the lathe I bought years ago so I can try it without forking out any more cash

Re: Thread milling
Just a quick update, still haven't finished the first 4 I made but I have made some more. For these I started the thread for the lids at 4mm rather than zero the same way the tutorial for thread milling does, just so the top & bottom fit together without having to use a spacer ring.
Also did some 3D carving on the lids.2 of the weaves are a bit low but that was my fault rather than any fault of the software.
I've also made a jig for the lids so I can make up a few boxes & then add something to the lid at a later date should it be required. Again these still need to be finished
Oh I also made a couple of them with just 2 pieces rather than 3

Re: Thread milling
Thanks Guys, certainly is fun Steve & I would have to agree with your comment about Vectric
Not finished yet though, still need to work on speed & feed settings, want to try different thread pitches to see what difference it makes (if any) I can also see some experimenting with resin fills both clear over a model & possibly coloured maybe a filled vcarve or just some coloured resin.
Wonder if anyone is making round resin river screw top boxes

Re: Thread milling
I know I'm a little late to the game, but this is exactly what I'm trying to do with the new thread milling tool. If you've figured a good way to get the lid and base to close tight I'd love to know. You mentioned slot cutters but the ones I have have a HUGE diameter (1-1/2" -- 38mm) and would be pretty scary on the CNC.
A jig for doing additional work is a great idea. Thanks.
