I think that I have a problem with the new chamfering tool

Post by alfredom »

I created a file to cut a picture frame, and i tried to use the new chamfering tool in the back to make the edge lighter.
If i well remember the presentation it was said that i can use a ball head mill to do it, but looking at the simulation in Aspire does not look correct.
Chamfer angle 70 degrees, width 19mm dept of cut 7mm.
I am using a .25 ball nose head mill, pass dept 0.05, stepover 5%.

What I get in the preview is a stepped slope.instead of a smooth slope, if the pass dept is influencing the finish what setting should I use?

Hi Alfredo,

Will you upload your actual Vectric project file? It could help speed up the process to help you.

If the file size is too large to upload here, please use DropBox or similar free file transfer program and post the download link here.

All the settings are there in the second image, all the rest is fine and has already been cut.

I haven't had a chance to use the new chamfer toolpath yet but after watching the video I think I can answer your question. Try setting the pass depth to a smaller value. I see in your setup screen you have it set to .05. Try .01 or even .009. You could also use a smaller bit.

Point of interest is at about 13:30 in the video.

hi alfredom,

as already correctly described by Steve
your values are not correct.

Remember you are now working with the tool on a steep wall

I get along best with these settings. See attached pictures

If this is still too rough for you, you can reduce the value from 14% to 7%.
It will only take longer with the smaller value

I see what is going on, I thought that it would create a smooth finishing path, at this point is better the moulding toolpath since it will follow smoothly the outside contour, while the chamfer does not.
Thanks for the fast reply and the link.

This is what I get with the moulding toolpath using just a straight line as moulding shape, it follows smoothly the contour of the object.

Hi,
The Moulding Toolpath creates a 3D toolpath
The chamfertolpath is only 2D

The Moulding Toolpath would be the better choice for your application
