Just Because You Can. . . . .

Post by TReischl »

Doesn't mean you should.

I am doing my old guy gripe/whine/snivel/complain thing.

I like looking at what other folks make. What I do not enjoy is when I click the pic and it takes quite a while for the picture to load. No, I do not have a slow computer and/or internet connection.

In the interest of full disclosure I have done the same thing. I can set my phone to the highest resolution so why not! In my case that is 5312X2988. A 16mb picture. My lowest setting is 3264X1836. 6mb picture. Those are great for printing pictures.

I have a high resolution monitor. The best it can do is 2560 X 1440. In other words it cannot display all that high resolution. Neither can my phone.

I have my phone configured so that it automatically stores pics to OneDrive. Of course Microsoft loves those big whopping 16mb pics, they gobble up storage space and eventually they figure they will be able to sell me more storage space.

It takes a little bit of time but I pass my pics through the picture software and resample it so that it makes more sense. Then I post the pic so it uploads and downloads faster.

So, I guess what I am saying is that if you are not printing pictures and just posting them on the internet it makes sense to set a lower resolution cause no one is going to see all that high resolution anyhow.

Rant complete. . . maybe. LOL.

I agree. I usually resize to 1024 pixel width, which is ample for forum posts.
For phone pics I sometimes just email the pics to myself which allows me to choose the resolution.

Exactly what I see also and thanks for pointing it out.
I always resize to 1040 X 768

I have the opposite complaint. Too many people post pictures that are much too small. I rarely see any that are too large.
What I do not enjoy is when I click the pic and it takes quite a while for the picture to load. No, I do not have a slow computer and/or internet connection.
Maybe you do have a slow internet connection. Try speedtest.net, and share your results.
Or, maybe it's the server where the images are hosted. I rarely see pics that take any time to load these days.

I'll respectfully go the other way - I appreciate larger images as I can zoom much further in and get more details!

It all depends on the purpose of the picture IMO.

Take this example - viewtopic.php?p=256119#p256119 - the picture is over 3000px and takes a little while to load but if you open it via a right click (as I always do) it appears as the full size so you can zoom right into to see the quality (or lack of) that the OP is talking about.

If you're posting a picture it's either to show off your great work or asking for help. Postage size pictures don't help. The bigger the better. IMHO

OR lack of speedtest :)
2020-07-11 08 LACK OF SPEED TEST.jpg
Just had telephone/internet repairman out for repairs....
and got an explanation that I'm at the very end of a 4.5 mile/35yr old cable.
And seeing as no more houses can be built because I'm surrounded by conservation land,
and only 7 houses within half a mile(all with cable tv connected)....I'll probably NEVER be high speed.

I STILL prefer the larger pics to examine detail(or lack thereof).

Scott, you must still have a dial up modem with that Win 95 computer.

Ted, guilty of taking the easy way out when I do one picture. I try to always reduce when I have multiple pics. I should always reduce so you won’t find that 1/4 sq inch where I didn’t sand, or that one piece of fuzz.

:D
No Bill:)
6 month old Win10 computer tower and 1 yr old DSL modem directly cabled....
Just 35 yr old wire....and phone wire Ends at my pole.
If they had wired me 1/2 mile away from a bigger road....they just rewired that road...I'd be a lot better!

I could go cable company and be high speed, but they wanted $1,300 to do a STUDY for connecting me for
an estimate! Don't watch TV...so it would only be for the faster internet.....$1,300 is more than half my property tax...and a LOT of food and bits! :)

I guess I'm have a bad day...download is usually around 940 Mbps using Comcast. Oh, wait a minute, I just used Xfinity speed test and it's back up where it's suppose to be. I know, I had to rub it in to you guys with slow internet speed.

Now I don't feel like the Lone Ranger...Thanks Bob!!

Funny....even Google Earth stopped updating on my property line :D :D
Easier to see my backyard beaver pond though:)
scott's.jpg
I'll take only having one neighbor close enough to even see when the leaves are off the trees....
AND knowing nobody can build anymore:)
scott
Not enough time to read a book Bob, but easy enough to turn around and see if any critters are out:)
