Finish Carving and offsets

Post by DHDeitrick »

In the Mother's Day Button tutorial, Beki talked about using a small offset with the roughing and finishing tools (.25 & .125" respectively). She used the diameter of the tools as the offset.

What is the reasoning behind using this offset?

It was. mentioned that the recommended offset was at least the radius of the tool.

What is the reason for choosing that number?
Does choosing the radius or diameter make a difference?
Do circumstances alter the choice?
Are there times when this offset should NOT be applied?

The more I learn, the less I know.
Thanks
Dave

It has to do with the finish of the edge of the carving and minimizing tool marks which can make a visual difference, whether you are using a finishing profile cut to "clean up" the edge or not. I generally use a small negative offset for such a finishing profile cut, too, to get rid of tool marks from when the carve falls over the edge.
