How to fillet a 3D model

Post by jarm2 »

I have watched all the tutorial videos and tried most of them. I just scanned them again and didn't fine any place where it tells me how to fillet a one piece of a 3D model to another. In the attached simple model I want to apply a fillet of some radius to the smaller piece to blend it to the larger piece. I tried using the sculpt tool with mixed results and certainly not a uniform radius fillet. Can someone point me in the right direction to accomplish this?

Thanks

Use a 2 rail sweep. If you want the transition outside of the smaller circle then use the two circles as your drive rails.
If you want the transition inside the smaller circle then create a tiny circle in the center and set the tiny circle and the smaller circle as your drive rails.

Create a vector that has your filet profile that you want. You may need to include a Leg on one end.

Since you're trying to combine 2 models why not just use the 2-rail sweep and create one model. Not sure how you can toolpath it though. Maybe with long bits

The actual piece I am modeling is not nice round pieces like the example I sent. I want something like Highpockets did, but don"t quite know how to apply that to my design. I have included a picture of my object. I want to fillet the smaller piece to the larger piece with a .25" fillet all around.

I'm still not clear on what you want. Something like this?

Create a vector boundary around the small component then Offset .125" Outside the vector boundary.
Select the Offset vector, under the Modeling Tab select Create Shape.
Select Cone, Angle +90, Base Height .125, Final Height Limit Height, Height .125, Combine with other components to Merge.

Thank you, Highpockets, that is exactly what I wanted to do. I will try that technique and see how it works for me. Have a great virus free day.

SteveNelson, how did you get the rounded fillet like that?

Highpockets, I did your technique and it worked quite well. Thanks for the help. I still would like to see how to get a rounded fillet, but will work on that. I have another project with a 3D shape I need to add rounded fillets in several places. I would like to use Aspire if possible so I can learn its 3D modeling functions better. What a great resource this forum is for learning and stretching my mind.

I used your model to draw/trace the base of the riser then used the offset tool to offset .125". Then I used a 2-rail sweep. Included in pic is the "arc" for the 2-rail sweep. I also node edited the offset to get the same number of nodes as the trace.

Same steps, just use the Dome instead of the Cone.

That seems so obvious after you posted it. Thanks again. Stretching my brain a bit is good for me.
