Stepover

Post by rtibbs »

Ok, now that I have time to kill while my six hour carve is progressing I have a question regarding step-over.
Watching my Y axis movement in one direction it steps .002 inches and in the opposite direction it steps .003 inches.
Just curious as to why the difference.

Too much time on my hands

Is the shopbot display 3 or 4 decimal places? Not that it matters, then you would wonder why it stepped .0001 and .0002. Most likely it is a rounding thing.

One thing I have noticed is that the software looks at the total distance, the amount it was told to stepover, divides one into the other and does a MOD operation on it. MOD is fancy puter talk for doing division that does not yield a decimal point. So then they use that number to redivide to get the actual stepover. I sort of know this because I used to write CAM software.

LOL, it only took me about 6 years to stop being fascinated with the router.

Nowadays I am fixated on watching the 3D printer.

And to think there was a time when I spent hours marveling over girls. . . . ..

I need to read a book instead of watching the Control software screen
Things to do while a long job is running:
  • clean the shop
  • apply finish to completed projects
  • organize the wood pile
  • build acoustic guitars or ukuleles
  • listen to podcasts (Mark Lindsay CNC)
  • sort a collection of nuts, bolts, washers, and screws
  • empty the shop vac
  • organize your router bit collection
  • watch the Vectric tutorials
  • create your own video tutorial
  • design a project of the month
  • learn Klingon
  • write letters to people that you care about
  • etc.
