Pitch Pocket/Mineral Streak in Hard Maple
Things were going well with the carving, however the wood decided to hide a pitch pocket or mineral streak in a critical spot.

Re: Pitch Pocket/Mineral Streak in Hard Maple
Hard to tell from the pic Randall, but would have carving it another .02" down have carved through it?
(Lots of relief carving for the bits though, so maybe not easily done)
"Creative Sanding" Maybe?
Or leave it as a "Mark of the Gods" that he will not travel the path of the masses
It's a Great carve regardless!
Wood Will be Wood.

Nice Carve, like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get with wood!
This could be a possibility... Here is an article about bleaching wood;

Re: Pitch Pocket/Mineral Streak in Hard Maple
I have had success with using sanding dust from the same piece of wood, using it as a filler with CA glue.
Nice carving though.
