Scroll or rope pattern
Can any one point me in a direction to do something like this. I know I can do the larger patterns from the Decorative clip art as a Flourish but I need help on the rope looking detail.
Thanks,
Matt

Re: Scroll or rope pattern
In the clipart, Borders, Rope Link.
Draw a vector representing your rope pattern. Select the vector and the rope link and do a Copy Along A Vector.
You will have to play with the spacing. This is one way.
I took a class from Michael Mezalick and he showed us a way, I'll have to did up my notes and get back to you.

Turns out Michael did an extrude and weave.

Extrude and Weave only way to go, ignore my first suggestion.
Thanks Michael your classes are the greatest.

If you want to make your rope more realistic sculpt fibers in the Rope link to make it look more fibrous.

Re: Scroll or rope pattern
I finally got around to making the "In The Labs" Barley Twist Display Table with a few personal choice changes. One of the changes was to make the top with a rope border. I used a 2-rail sweep but after reading this thread I decided to try the Extrude and Weave method. It's by far easier and does a better job.

i downloaded ohiolyons crv3d file, but that is a copy along vector technique as far as i can see, im trying to understand the weave technique as far as a rope vector goes, can anyone explain ?
woodmizer sawmill and joe's hybrid cnc, a good combination

That is a weave. A true weave goes over and under itself. The weave function of Aspire was used to create the roped file I posted. The copy along a vector function is not as sophisticated and will not produce this smooth of a rope.

I don't understand it either. I can replicate the curved vector and use the rope link model to fill the curved vector using the Extrude and Weave tool, but it only puts every third rope link along the curve. No option I tried will fill it in correctly all in one pass. This is similar to Copy Along Curve, but It still can't be called "weaving" in my opinion. It only places copies side by side along a curve even if it can be made to do that with a setting that I missed. The only way I could do it is to copy the rope links and paste them, then carefully slide them into position, thereby negating the usefulness of trying to use this method.sawmiller wrote:i downloaded ohiolyons crv3d file, but that is a copy along vector technique as far as i can see, im trying to understand the weave technique as far as a rope vector goes, can anyone explain ?

Re: Scroll or rope pattern
Here is a screen shot of the settings I used. The outside diameter of the circle is 10 inches. It is offset to the inside by .375 and that is used for the Extrude. Notice the "Weave" feature is unchecked. Of course this is dependent on the size of the rope link clipart. I left this one at the original size.CarveOne wrote:I don't understand it either. Re: Scroll or rope pattern
No need to activate the “Weave” option unless you actually have overlapping vectors (crossovers) that you need “over-under” weaves.
In this case if a plain circle (no crossovers), it doesn’t “hurt” anything, it just has no affect one way or the other.

Re: Scroll or rope pattern
When I was playing with it originally I had the rope go under itself, I deleted it and did the simpler rope and didn't uncheck weaving due to it not effecting the less complicated image.

Re: Scroll or rope pattern
And technically since the example does not go under or over itself it is just an extrude The OP image appears to need a weave though.
